Winter Lawn Care with Your Lawn Equipment
Winter is coming, and with it comes cold weather, snow and ice, and deep freezes. You might be worried about how your yard is going to fair during extreme weather. To that, we would say to not stress, but to be diligent. Your yard is naturally going to survive winter and is even meant to handle every season of the year—to some extent. Depending on how you want your lawn to look come spring, and depending on just how extreme the weather is, it might also be a good idea to take every opportunity you can to care for your lawn over the cold months.
That’s why Central Arkansas Mahindra has provided some tips for winter lawn care, plus we’ve got your premier selection of lawn equipment to help you with any touch-ups you might need to do. We’re in Little Rock, Arkansas, so visit us today to see how we can help you. We welcome all patrons from Sherwood, Conway, and Hot Springs.
Take Advantage of Good Weather
First and foremost, you’ll want to take advantage of any weekend or evening with good clear weather to clean things up as needed. Not every day will be miserable, so if you can muster the energy, cutting the lawn periodically or trimming some of the hedges can help cut down on the amount of work waiting for you in the spring.
Aeration
Getting essential nutrients from the air into the soil is still important, even as debris and snow pile up. Aerating your lawn now can help prevent sealing off these essential nutrients. If your lawn is big enough, you’ll probably want special tools to help you with this process.
Monitor Traffic
Damage over time can leave lasting impacts on the quality of your lawn, no matter how well you care for it in other aspects. Ask family, friends, and guests to stick to designated walkways to avoid trampling parts of your yard you would like to keep healthy.
Watch for Deep Freezes
Snow can actually be good for your lawn. It adds a layer of insulation to protect the grass and soil from freezing winds and temperatures. However, if you see a deep freeze on the horizon, know that this is a level of winter weather that your lawn is less inclined to handle well. The best way to prepare for this is to remove as much existing ice as you can, which likely is accumulating at low points in your yard.
Remove Debris
Debris, like leaves, can create a sealing layer, the damaging kind that we mentioned earlier, which doesn’t allow air to get into the soil and provide it with essential nutrients. Because of this, you’ll want to clear away debris as it collects on your lawn, preferably before snowfall.
Use Melting Agents with Caution
Some people like to use melting agents, like salt, to clear away snow and ice from their sidewalks, but be careful around your yard. Salt and some other products can damage your lawn.
Prune During the Winter
Some of your plants will start to die as the weather gets colder. That’s inevitable and an essential part of the life cycle. Take this opportunity to prune your plants so all dead ends are removed and there are only healthy stems and branches, ready for growth.
Keep an eye on the weather and plan your lawn care around when it’ll be relatively warm, when it’ll be pretty cold, and when it’ll be extremely cold. This will dictate what you do for your yard and when. With the right strategy, you can have a healthy lawn in the spring ready for warmer days.
