The History of Mahindra
For 75 years, one of the world’s leading manufacturers of farm equipment and light commercial vehicles has been Mahindra. This company, based out of Mumbai, India, is an international success in many different industries, but their farm equipment and particularly their tractors have proven to be extremely popular and hard to beat. With over 40,000 employees and a yearly revenue of over $15 billion, Mahindra shows no signs of slowing down.
Central Arkansas Mahindra is proud to be your Little Rock Mahindra dealer, so here’s the history of this India-based agricultural manufacturing giant.
Early History
In 1945, just as World War II drew to a close, Mahindra & Mohammed was founded on October 2nd by brothers KC and JC Mahindra along with their partner Ghulam Mohammed. The company was based out of the city of Mumbai and began its work in trading steel. They also gained license to produce vehicles for Willys Jeep, which led to their entrance into the world of light commercial vehicle manufacturing.
In 1947, after the partition between India and Pakistan, Ghulam Mohammed moved to Pakistan to take up a post as the country’s first Finance Minister. The two Mahindra brothers thus renamed their company “Mahindra & Mahindra.”
Ten years after its founding, Mahindra & Mahindra was ready to go public. Its stocks hit the Bombay Stock Exchange only three years later. Following this, the company joined forces with acclaimed American agricultural manufacturer International Harvester in order to produce tractors. Within a few decades, Mahindra became India’s largest-selling tractor brand, a position it has maintained since the 1980s.
Mahindra Group
Mahindra spent much of its formative years joining up with companies across the globe to enter more and more industries, including British Telecom, Automobiles Peugeot France, International Tractor Company of India and Maxi Motors Financial Services Limited. This led to the formation of Mahindra Group, an India-based conglomerate that manages all the company’s various brands and services.
By 1994, Mahindra Group was ready to split up into Strategic Business Units in order to better organize itself. These six units include Automotive, Farm Equipment, IT, Infrastructure Development Services, Steel Trading and Financial Services. Each of these branches is responsible for its own product development, and the company is proud to be part of 22 key industries. In fact, their success has led Mahindra to place 17th on the 2018 list of Fortune India 500 companies.
Farm Equipment
Of course, agricultural machinery remains one of the core industries for Mahindra, as they have been India’s leading tractor manufacturer for almost 40 years. Mahindra® tractors are renowned the world over, including in the United States, and they remain the world’s largest-selling tractor brand by sheer volume since over 40 countries sell Mahindra tractors. This is because every Mahindra tractor is designed to boost production and efficiency at a great value.
Not only are the tractors themselves worthy of recognition, but the many tractor implements available for Mahindra tractors make each model more versatile and effective. Whether a farmer wants assistance with threshing, harvesting, baling, sowing or preparing the land, there’s a Mahindra tractor attachment that’s perfectly designed to get the job done well.
