When spring arrives, the hills are alive with the sounds of landscaping crews and lawn mower engines! If you are new to lawn care, you might be wondering how to get started. And if you consider yourself an expert, spring is the perfect time for a refresher course! This guide from Central Arkansas Mahindra can help you get ready for the season ahead.

Clearing Debris

First thing’s first: you will need to remove any debris that piled up on your lawn over the winter. This may include branches, sticks, and dead leaves. Who knows, you might even find dog toys or stray pieces of garbage! You should never risk mowing over any kind of debris, no matter how small, so give your lawn a thorough sweep – and enlist a child or two if you need a keen-eyed assistant!

Treating Your Lawn

If your lawn is looking pretty sad, it may need some extra TLC after a long hard winter. This is a good time to apply weed killers and insecticides if needed. You should also water your lawn daily and allow the grass to grow at least two inches tall before mowing. Fertilizer can be added after the first mow to further improve the condition of your grass.

Getting Ready to Mow

The next step in preparing your lawn for spring is to give your lawn mower a thorough maintenance check. Your mower has probably spent the last several months gathering dust in your garage, so hose it off and clean the undercarriage. Confirm the blades are sufficiently sharp and free of damage. If you own a gas mower, you will need to refill the gas tank, change the oil, swap out the oil and air filters, and inspect the spark plugs. Now let your mower warm up in the sunshine for about an hour before you start mowing.

Mowing Your Grass

Now you are officially ready to cut your grass. For best results, try to reduce the height of your grass by about one-third. You should aim to mow your lawn about every five days from spring through early summer to prevent overgrowth. That being said, you should also avoid mowing after a rain shower, as wet grass can get tangled up in your mower blades. Watch the forecast and plan ahead!
